SPRING  SPRINGAR  SPREE

in Takoma Park, MD (by Washington, DC)

April 26-29, 2012

You can attend all or part of the Spring Springar Spree, from the Thursday evening concert by our VIP Norwegian staff through Sunday afternoon.

Featuring TELESPRINGAR, the springar from Telemark—it looks a little like swing but feels different, there’s a delightful couple-turn, and the basic leads are easy!

Dance and traditional singing (kveding) classes taught by "national treasure" master dancer/singer from Telemark and his partner.  Plus an extra hour on men’s step variants by a US expert during the singing class.

Hardanger-fiddle (hardingfele) classes taught by a well-regarded teacher and fiddle craftsman, who's the reigning Norwegian Hardanger-fiddler champion!

For those interested in traditional costumes, this year we also welcome an expert seamstress from the Carolina Sons of Norway, who will share her costume photos, help folks choose/make/alter/clean costume pieces and jewelry, sell costume kits/material/jewelry, etc.  She will lead costume-making workshops on Friday and Saturday (adv reg req’d), and can take orders to make costumes for a reasonable price.

Spree events include Thursday night concert followed by a little dancing, Friday daytime costume workshop and evening dance party, Saturday workshops & dance party, Sunday workshops & afternoon potluck/dance party.  All-live Hardanger fiddle music by our Norwegian guest champion and our beloved local fiddler (foremost in US!).  Dance parties will have a good variety of Springars and Gammaldans, two separate fiddler jam/practice spaces, and the famous cozy atmosphere of our monthly Norwegian-style potluck house parties.

Beginners/listeners/watchers will be welcomed, as always.  No need to bring a dance partner—we mix—but please bring clean shoes for dancing. Spare beds available. Comfortable price—don’t let your budget keep you away.

NIH Fitness and Dance Center, Building T-39, Bethesda, MD, at the south-central part of the NIH campus. See a map of NIH with T39 marked at the center bottom, the small blue horizontal rectangle just below building 28 and northwest of building 41. The class is in the front or back room (reach the back room by going past the dance floor on your left to a closed door).

Bring picture ID if you drive or walk onto NIH.

From DC and other points south of NIH: take Wisconsin Av. north. Past South Drive you need to make a U-turn to be going south on Wisconsin (as if coming from north of NIH).

From north of NIH: from the I-495 beltway, take the exit in Bethesda to south 355 / Rockville Pike / Wisconsin Av.

From the north side of NIH, do NOT turn right into the commercial vehicle inspection or the staff entrances. Keep going south past South Drive, looking for the visitor entrance. This is near the south side of NIH, not the north side.

Past (south of) South Dr., turn right into NIH at the NEW NIH Gateway Drive, the visitor entrance. Park there (no charge after 7 pm, no car inspection) and walk to T39, or have the car inspected and drive to T39.

From Gateway Dr.: Drive through security and you will come out on Center Drive. Turn right onto Center Drive and take the quick third left (not into either of the lefts into parking) across from Natcher (Building 45), onto Medlars Drive. Take the first right fork onto (again) Medlars Drive, and the next right through paired stop signs. At the end of that short block the NIH Fitness and Dance Center, Building T39, is straight in front of you. Turn left and park, or go past T39 and park on the left. Park in NIH employee permit parking (no permits needed after 7 pm, on weekends, or on holidays). The door is up the stairs on the south side of the building, not up the stairs by the parking lot past the building.

From the Medical Center Metro stop, 12 minute walk: (NEW directions): Exit the Metro station, walk straight forward, and go through visitor inspection. Before you exit the building, take the elevator up a level. Take the path to the left, behind the building you were just in. Cross the first sharp right path and take the next path to the right, which will go past the child-care center (on your left) and building 45 (on your right). Walk past building 45, turn right to the entrance of building 45, and walk left down the entrance driveway for bldg. 45 away from the building. Cross Center Drive and walk on the sidewalk on the right side (but do not turn right on Center Drive), as the sidewalk curves to the right. Walk past both of the double pairs of stop signs. Just across the street in front of you is the NIH Fitness and Dance Center, Building T39.
